Stone Town is one of the few intact historical Swahili coastal trading towns of East Africa. It’s a compilation of small shops, a variety of people, bustling markets and unique places to eat. It is known for its mosques, churches and Hindu temples. When in Stone Town, you will visit the historical sites such as the Anglican church that David Livingstone (one of the Missionaries who helped abolish Slave Trade in East Africa) founded, the Palace which was erected in 1883 also known as the House of Wonders. It is a former sultan’s palace with a clock tower.
The Old Fort now houses a cultural center and a stone amphitheater. In one day you will be able to take in all of these sites mentioned such as the House of Wonders, the Palace Museum and the site of the former slave market at the Anglican Cathedral Church. Enjoy the walking through the narrow streets to explore the stunning carved Arab doors with brass studs, carved balconies, the old post office or the kanga market. This old town takes you back into time and if you love culture than this is a place you won’t want to miss seeing.
